School broke up on Thursday. The summer holidays are officially here. Finch, Little Owl and I found a shady spot in the garden, lay on our backs in the grass and turned our toes up to the bright blue sky. Swifts whistled about above us. A tiny dot of an aeroplane left a vapour trail and the washing flapped lazily in the breeze. Later on, in the still stifling heat of the early evening this magpie moth cooled itself on our kitchen radiator.
